PUBG Mobile is fighting its own battle against cheaters and hackers; explains how it catches cheaters

Despite what most of us like to believe, PUBG has been involved in a long battle against cheaters and hackers that populate the battle royale game. Since its launch, many have tried to game the system and gain an unfair advantage over other players logging into the game to win a much-deserved Chicken Dinner.

However, such hackers have always been met with resistance from the game developers who have regularly come out with new measures to find those who cheat and have then taken swift action too by banning them for life from the game. While this cat-and-mouse game between the team at PUBG and the hackers has been going on for long, a clear winner now seems to be emerging on the scene.

PUBG which has been working to improve its Cheating Detection mechanism, claims that its efforts have finally started to bear fruit. And to get this information out to its community of players, its team has now issued an open letter that for the first time gives a deeper look into the steps taken by the company — and the ones it plans to take in the future — to combat hackers.

How does PUBG Mobile catch cheaters?

The team at PUBG has revealed that to catch hackers, Tencent has put a Game Security Team in place that is constantly working around the clock to monitor, identify, and remove cheaters in-game. However, the first line of defence against cheating is their systems that scan for suspect software and modified game data.

The company explains that most cheating software is “fairly easy to spot” because the company has an “enormous library of cheating software and techniques” that allow it to catch hackers fairly quickly. Despite being the simplest method, it is also the most effective one to catch cheaters, and as such is a method that PUBG claims it is constantly working to improve.

Apart from this, the company also has other levels of checks in place, most of which it hasn’t disclosed for the fear of tipping hackers off. However, one method that it did speak about is in-game observation. PUBG has explained that even in the case when no cheating software is detected, the game’s security team is always on the lookout for suspicious behaviour, and when they notice something that looks a bit off, they usually monitor the player for a while to determine if the player is cheating his way through the game.

How can you help PUBG catch a cheater?

But it’s not the team at PUBG that alone can catch cheats. The company has time and again reached out to its community of players to help them identify cheaters. However, the game developers have also cautioned against reporting every second player for cheating, as it could also be true that the player at the opposite end may just be good, or plain lucky — instead of being a cheater.

As such, the company has asked players to not jump the gun when it comes to calling out cheaters and not rely solely on evidence garnered from the spectate mode as the results of the mode could at times be less than accurate as playing the game yourself. This is down to potential lag issues which are multiplied as a user is watching something impacted not only by communications between them and the server but also between the other player and the server.
